DELL XPS 13

Pros and Cons

The Dell XPS 13 is and has been the most loved laptops of all time. Dell has been successful in developing a laptop with a minimalistic design, strong performance specifications, and great battery life. This laptop does not run too hot even when overclocked which make it efficient and safer to use. Obviously, no laptop is perfect for everyone, and hence the missing USB Type-A ports can be a reason for some people to cry about. The sleek aesthetic look of the laptops wins our hearts along with the fluent flow of performance.

DESIGN

The design of the Dell XPS 13 is one of the best designs ever on a windows laptop, which is why it has been in the number one list of all the critics and reviewers. Over time, there have not been many differences in the Dell XPS 13 line-up, they all look more or less the same with some inside specifications upgrades. The Dell XPS 13 9370 is the newer version of the device which has a sleeker built and a lighter chassis. This new design upgrade comes in the all-new gold and white color scheme which looks flawless on this laptop. The silver and black color scheme also exists with this model, and it has always been the classic for Dell. The gold colored aluminum looks gorgeous on the top and bottom of the laptop, the deck and the inside are made up of woven crystalline silica which is white in color and makes it look as it looks, gorgeous. The deck has always been comfortable to put the palms on and type for long hours without a sign of fatigue which is a good thing on a laptop. The laptop weighs only 2.64 pounds which is lighter than its predecessor. The measurements of the device are 0.46 inches thicker at its thickest point and 0.3 inches thicker at its thinnest point. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the HP’s Spectre 13 both surpass the measurements and weight of the Dell XPS 13 and are lighter and thinner than this machine. The design of this laptop has proven to be one of the most attractive ones.

PORTS

The connectivity options provided by Dell on the XPS 13 have been narrowed down. In all the previous generations, the XPS 13 had two USB Type-A ports and a full SD card reader slot, but in virtue to make this device thin and light, some sacrifices had to be made, and Dell did it with cutting down on the ports. In this generation of the Dell XPS 13, there are two Thunderbolt 3.0 ports which have the capacity to charge the laptop and also connect to high-speed peripheral devices such as a 4K display. It also consists of a Nobel lock slot and a battery indicator which comes in handy most of the times. Also, there is a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack, a micro-SD card slot and also the future proof USB type-C port. The Thunderbolt 3.0 ports on this laptop are capable of supporting four-lane PCI connections which enable it to connect with eGPUs that can be used for hard-core gaming. The previous models of the XPS 13 only had the support for two-lane PCl connections which was evidently behind the four-lane ones in this model. These are the connectivity options available on the Dell XPS 13 which make it universally accepted.

DISPLAY

The display measures 13.3 inches diagonally which is the optimum size of a good display in laptops. The bezels on this laptop are known as the ‘InfinityEdge’ which means that the bezels are minimal as compared to other laptops. The bezels on this one are 24 percent thinner than the average size of bezels on displays which makes it almost full screen. This bezel-less display looks stunning and gorgeous when kept on a table, and that’s what catches most people’s eyes. With no black or silver borders around the display, the images and pictures appeal more to the user than in any other laptop which makes this laptop unique and beautiful. The resolutions on this display are different in the two variants that it comes in, the 3840 x 2160p which is the 4K UltraHD display variant of the laptop and the other one being the standard 1920 x 1080p which is the Full HD standard display. The screen on this laptop is non-touch sensitive which offers spectacular brightness and color. It is obvious that the 4K display variant of laptop would have a better display, but it will be more expensive than the standard 1080p display. The color contrast and the brightness on the display is remarkable, and the image quality and sharpness of the pictures looks very detailed. On test brightness test, the display scored 377nits on the standard HD display; while on the other hand, the 4K display achieved a score of 425nits which is a significant improvement. On another test, which is the colorimeter test, the standard HD display covered 119percent of the sRGB color Gamut while the 4K display covered around 135 percent of the sRGB Gamut.  Both of these results surpass the laptop category average and are better than most of its other competitors on the market. Thus, in terms of display performance, the laptop wins our hearts while pleasing our eyes.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD

The typing experience on this keyboard is one of the best experiences one could have with a laptop. The deck where the palm rests while typing is exceptionally comfortable which enables us to type for long hours without tiredness. The keyboard consists of island styled keys which means that the keys are very well spaced throughout the keyboard which minimizes error rates while typing. The keys are shallow on this keyboard with only 1.2 millimeters of key-travel, and the actuation force of 73 grams make it a perfect combination for comfortable typing. The keys are snappy and responsive which enables the user to type faster than usual. On testing with the 10fastfingers.com benchmark typing test, I scored 98 words per minute which is my best score yet, beating my 84 words per minute on an average. The keys enable swift typing with better experience than most other laptops.

Talking about the touchpad which sits just beneath the keyboard, it is button-less and extremely responsive as well. The touchpad measures 4.1 x 2.4-inches which is neither too big nor too small for a touchpad to be. My fingers have a lot of room to explore the screen with this touchpad. The navigation on this touchpad is commendable with the amount of accuracy that it beholds. The clicks on are embedded within and are the result of tactile feedback mechanism which I think is very much better than the physical button clicks. The multi-touch gestures like pinch to zoom and three fingers swipe are a treat on this touchpad, and all of these features together form the best keyboard and touchpad combination ever on any laptop.

PERFORMANCE

The Dell XPS 13 comes in many different variants; the high-end variant of the XPS 13 consists of a Core i7-8550U processor with 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD with the addition of the 4K display. The medium level variant on the laptop comprises of an Intel Core i5-8250U CPU with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD with a non-touch 1920 x 1080p display. Both these variants are better in their own skin and perform better than most of its competitors. These specifications are reliable and can perform every command thrown at it with ease. The laptop delivers sustainable performance and capable of performing long tasks without getting slowed down by the rising temperature of the system; thanks to the powerful new technology developed by Dell used as in their cooling systems. The unique thermal insulation pipes used in the technology sure know how to beat the heat. My team performed a test to convert a 4K video to 1080p, and in this lengthy procedure, the laptop did the job in an outstanding 15 minutes of time only. On the Cinebench R15 benchmark test, the Intel Core i7 processor scored about 700 points which is excellent and eventually dropped to 654 by the 10th attempt. The Cinebench test comprises of drawing ten 3D images in a row to measure pressure performance in a system. Performing the same analysis on two of its competitors, both failed to beat the XPS 13 in this regard.  On the Geekbench 4 synthetic benchmark performance test, the laptop scored 13,745 points with the standardized variant with Intel Core i5 and 14,478 with the Intel Core i7 processor.  These scores are better than the category average in both aspects.

The system is also fast with its 1TB hard drive, I can claim so because it can transfer 6GB of mixed media data in just 12 seconds which is outstanding with the rate of 400.4 MBps which surpasses the ultraportable category average of 229 MBps and is also better than its competitors like the HP Spectre 13 with Intel Core i5 inside. The performance on a laptop cannot be tested unless we have the full information on the graphics processor on the system. Let’s find out what the gaming status of the laptop is.

GRAPHICS

The XPS 13 9370 is blessed with Intel’s own integrated UHD 620 graphics processor which is powerful enough to run tasks like elementary video editing and elementary gaming. Testing with the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited synthetic benchmark graphics test, the laptop variant with Intel Core i5 processor scored 77,745 points, and the one powered by Intel Core i7 scored 85,747 which are far beyond the laptop category average and most of its competitors in the market. These graphics performances are better than the XPS 13’s prior variants.  When it comes to gaming, I wouldn’t suggest you play heavy games on this device. On the Dirt 3 gaming tests, the Intel Core i7 variant covered a frame rate of 67.4 fps and the one with Intel Core i5 scored 57.4 fps which makes the systems qualified to run games on low settings for a smooth experience.

BATTERY LIFE

In terms of battery consumption, both these devices do great in their respective fields. The Dell XPS with Intel Core i5 lasts for about 12 hours and 34 minutes on a single charge which is outstanding. The variants with Intel Core i7 inside runs for a little shorter time with just 8 hours and 23 minutes of battery life than the high-end model; this difference in battery consumption is probably because of the 4K display and other higher specifications of the system, the more power the processor draws, the more battery it consumes. Now, the bummer with the XPS 13 9370 is that in order to make this variant lighter and thinner, Dell switched from 60watt-hour battery to 52 watt-hour battery which ran for approximately 15 hours on a single charge. Well, something has to be sacrificed to get something better, and Battery was the component with the XPS 13.

PRICE

The Dell XPS 13 with a 13.3-inch display, Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of PCIe SSD and Integrated UHD 620 graphics processor is priced at $699.90 on Amazon.com as a special discount. According to the critics, the price of this laptop is totally worth of what the laptop delivers in areas of looks and performance.

VERDICT

The Dell XPS 13 is one of my best-reviewed laptops, and it outperforms my previous laptops with such great specifications and performance capabilities. The minimalistic future-oriented design of the laptop catches the eye at the first glance. The laptop is equipped with a limited yet powerful connectivity ports and also have a comfortable, smooth typing experience. The battery life is spectacular especially with the variant which is powered by the Intel Core i5 processor. All in all, this laptop is the best anyone could have with its performance, portability, and design. This has been a popular laptop amongst masses, and it tends to be for the next few years too.

Asus Zenbook Flip UX360CA

Pros and Cons

The Asus Zenbook Flip UX360CA is an amazing two-in-one laptop which is moderately priced and is a good deal for people out there. The laptop is very lightweight with a fan-less design which makes it thin and keeps it cool, even in processor overclock situations. The display is vivid and offers great color and contrast, also the best laptops in terms of battery life and other features. The performance on the laptop might not be what you were looking forward to, let’s see what this laptop has got in stores for us.

DESIGN

Asus is famous for its concentric circles used in its devices, be it laptop or a mobile phone. Well, the Zenbook flip is no exception to it. The design of this laptop is very futuristic and attractive with the full aluminum body and carved Asus logo with the color which the company calls; ‘Mineral Gray’ looks absolutely stunning. This design is popular in mostly all the ZenBook variants because of its liking amongst the masses. On opening, one will find a stunning display with minimal bezels, and an island styled keyboard with a huge touchpad. The chassis of the laptop is entirely made of metal and no unnecessary plastic used. This all-metal body makes the laptop look premium and gorgeous. The Zenbook measures 12.6 x 8.7 x 0.6 inches in size and weighs around 3 pounds which is lighter than most of its competitors in the market including the HP Spectre x360 13t. The design of the laptop is really thought of and enables its user to use it in four different modes, the tent mode, laptop mode, tablet mode, and stand mode. The overall design of this laptop appeals most people because of the use of premium aluminium, and the light weight makes it a preferred candidate for portability.

PORTS

Being a two-in-one laptop, the connectivity options provided by Asus remains limited to only the sides of the display. On the left sits a USB 3.0 port and a SD card slot only; and on the right side, one will find another USB 3.0 port, a USB type-C port, a micro HDMI slot and a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack. This laptop is home to all the necessary ports which are mostly required by users, and Asus has been generous to give the USB Type-C port which provides it with a future proofing to transfer and connect high-speed peripherals.

DISPLAY

The display on the Zenbook Flip is full HD and touch sensitive with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p. The display looks absolutely amazing with the bright color which offers great viewing angles and a lot of vivid images. I watched Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse on this laptop, and I could clearly see the reds and the blues on his suit with every little detail on his web. The picture quality on this display can beat many well-known competitors on the market which is a good thing. The display has a warmer tint to it which tends to reduce the stress it lays on the eyes and can reduce redness in eyes and strain, as I said. The reflective screen on this laptop cum tablet looked perfectly clear when viewed from the center of the screen.  On the sRGB color gamut, the laptop covered 105 percent, and the result came out after conducting the colorimeter test on the display. This coverage is better than the laptop category average of 93 percent, and that’s what makes it the best to be on this list.  On testing with the Delta E color accuracy benchmark test, the laptop scored 0.6 which outperforms most of its competitors but fails to reach the category average. Talking about the bright screen, on the brightness test, the display emits 299nits which is impressive just one point behind the 300nits category average score.  The screen is brighter than the Spectre 13 and the XPS 13 as well. The bright, colorful display of this laptop is one of the major reasons why people invest on this machine. The display is elegant and robust as a component.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD

The keyboard offers island styled keys which are well spaced throughout the deck and are a little ‘quirky‘ to use. The keys are made up of plastic which is a cheap material as compared to the rest of the aluminum body of the laptop. This standard component offers only 57 grams of actuation force which makes the keys lose and less firm like the rest of other laptops. On the 10fastfingers.com benchmark typing test, I scored 102 words per minute which is near my personal best of 115 words per minute with the error rate being 3 percent only. This shows that the keys are fast and responsive and will provide you with the best of experience while typing research papers or doing office work. The keyboard is comfortable to use, and one can type for hours without any discomfort and lousy experience.

Talking about the touchpad, it measures 4.1 x 2.8-inches, and a touchpad of this size is more than sufficient to navigate those fingers across the desktop. The smooth touch of the metal touchpad makes it easy to use, and the clicks are very responsive too. The accurate navigation of the touchpad makes it fun to use the laptop and provides with a smooth experience.

PERFORMANCE

The performance delivered by this laptop is less than what you must have expected. The low powered Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor which clocks at 0.9GHz is in-charge of the show with 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCIe SSD. The low clock speed is responsible for the below average performance of the system, but despite that, the multitasking on the system is smooth to some extent. While playing a 1080p video on YouTube with additional 21tabs of Google Chrome and a game paused in the background, all of these tasks at the same time definitely take a toll on the Intel Core m3 processor, and I noticed minimal lag while switching between these programs. On the synthetic Benchmark tests, the numbers aren’t that great either. Firstly, on the Geekbench 3 benchmark performance test, the laptop managed to score 4,876 points which is behind the laptop category average score of 5,756 points. On the speed test, the 256GB SSD is capable of transferring 6GB of mixed media files in just 32 seconds at the rate of 171.2 megabytes per second which is fast but not when compared to other competitors under the same category in the market.  Next, on the OpenOffice spreadsheet macro benchmark test, the system took 6 minutes to transfer twenty thousand spreadsheet names and addresses. The performance on this system is not up to the mark but is capable of performing the daily tasks and run regular programs. This laptop is not for gamers or for coders and even designers; it is a general two-in-one laptop which is for basic elementary usage.

GRAPHICS

The performance on this laptop is enhanced by the graphics card installed on this laptop. The system is equipped with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 515 graphics processor which is capable of running basic games, not too heavy to overload the system as it might result in freezing or lagging. On the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited graphics benchmark test, the system scored 52,643 points which I am happy to tell you, surpasses the laptop category average of 50,152 points. The graphics are great on the system and with the bright, vivid and colorful display; the laptop looks excellent and deserving to be on this list of top five laptops.

BATTERY LIFE

The 13 inch two-in-one Asus Zenbook Flip can run for 9 hours and 34 minutes straight on a single juice which is just fine on what it delivers, but critics complained as installing a low powered processor must save some battery but the battery installed was of low Watt Hour power. Hence, the 9 hours battery makes you deliberately forget chargers at home and take your laptop cum tablet to wherever you desire. It makes it portable in a big way.

PRICE

The Asus Zenbook Flip UX360CA with an Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor clocked at 0.9 GHz along with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD and integrated Intel HD Graphics 515 graphics processor is priced at $679 on Amazon.com/US. The price is effectively overrated, but anyone who is willing to buy this aluminum built laptop must go ahead and purchase it.

VERDICT

The Zenbook Flip by Asus is a very productive machine, a two-in-one laptop which can be used as a tablet as well. The touch sensitive display and the plastic keys on the keyboard are better off, and one enjoys the experience of using such a laptop. The design of the laptop is attractive with full aluminum built which gives the users a premium feel. The display is bright and vivid which provides with a good color to contrast ratio as well. Overall, this laptop is not a bad deal for under $700 as having a two-in-one with such design is a great thing. Well, no laptop is hundred percent perfect, this laptop has its flaws too; the performance is not quite what you must expect from this but is perfect for a certain group of people and not heavy duty users. Otherwise, it is an excellent choice as a laptop.

Asus VivoBook S510

Pros and Cons

Another masterpiece from Asus delivers quite a performance and is extremely lightweight and thin. The display is rich in color and provides beautiful contrast to its pictures. The audio and the speakers are not be left behind on this one with loud and clear sound and most importantly the dual drives equipped on this laptop. The 15-inch laptop is a great deal with all the performance which the other Asus laptop could not deliver. There might be some concerns regarding the battery life and horrible webcam, but otherwise, the laptop is perfection.

DESIGN

The Vivobook s510 is one of the most attractive laptop designs and popular among masses. The variant that I am reviewing comes in a Champagne Gold color which looks stunning. The lid is covered with brushed aluminium, and the sides are built from plastic. The display is more or less bezel-less with the ‘NanoEdge‘ technology used by Asus in most of its laptops. The bezel on this laptop is barely 0.3inches in size which looks negligible alongside the regular laptops. Gratefully, the webcam placement is done on right on this laptop, i.e., on the top bezel which avoids the awkward camera viewing angles like on the Dell XPS 13 and Dell XPS 15, where the camera was placed on the bottom bezel. The Vivobook measures 14.2 x 9.5 x 0.7 inches in size and weighs roughly around 3.45 pounds which is light. These dimensions of the laptop make it more portable and user-friendly on some levels.

PORTS

Talking about the connectivity options on this one, the laptop consists of mainly all the ports which a user may require like on the right deck there is a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, a power connector and fortunately a USB type-C port which is incapable of charging the device like on the MacBook. Similarly, on the left-hand side sits another two USB 3.0 ports and an SD card slot. Thus, in terms of connectivity, Asus has left no stone unturned.

DISPLAY

The 15-inch display with minimal bezels looks absolutely stunning on the Vivobook s510. The display carries a resolution of 1920 x 1080p which is full HD and provides sharp, clear, detailed pictures along with vibrant colors. I watched Deadpool 2 on this laptop, and the red to black contrast of his suit looked absolutely sharp and detailed, I could tell the wrinkles on his face were pretty clear as well. The viewing angles looked amazing up to 60 degrees on the left and right because of the rich color and brightness. The display also has an optional vivid mode, eye-care mode, and normal mode whichever is best suited to your eyes. On testing with the colorimeter, the display covered 83 percent of the sRGB color Gamut which is far greater than the mainstream competitors of this laptop like the Inspiron 15 and HP Envy x360, but unfortunately, the laptop category average of 92 percent coverage could not be achieved. In terms of brightness, the display did reasonably well with 242nits of brightness on the lightmeter benchmark test conducted but again was so close to the ultraportable category average of 280nits.

SOUND

The sound system on the Asus s510 is blessed with SonicMaster audio system which is responsible for providing with rich, loud and clear sound through the speakers. The clear separation of sounds and tunes while playing any song is an indication of a good sound system, and that is what makes this Vivobook s510 a rocking laptop. Asus has provided with ‘Audio-Wizard’ software which consists of many sound profile options for you to choose from and also allows you to manually adjust the sound settings which may sound amazing by a person who knows how the sound is adjusted. Overall, the sounds system on this laptop is just absolutely amazing and brings life to the music that we hear.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

The keyboard on this laptop is not as swift as any other laptop; the keys on this one are shallow with a key-travel of 1.18 millimeters and an actuation force of 70 grams which might not be the perfect combination for typing. The keys are stiff and shallow which means that it might take some sessions of regular use before you get entirely used to the keyboard and the pace.  The keyboard is an island-style keyboard with lots of spaces between the keys for less typing error and perfect spacing between each key. The 15-inch laptop has a huge deck and critics lament over the fact that it could have a full numeric keypad considering the space on the deck. The keys are highly responsive, and I reached a speed of 97 words per minute on testing with the 10fastfingers.com typing test which is slightly below my personal best with 107 words per minute. Typing gets a lot faster and better with regular use of the keyboard!

Talking about the curser on the laptop which is the touchpad, it is responsive, it is smooth, and it is 4.1 x 2.8-inches in dimension which is big enough to slide my fingers and navigate throughout the desktop. It is a button-less touchpad which have responsive left and right clicks. The touch is smooth and registers touch very quickly and is also swift with the multi-touch gestures like the three finger-swipes and pinch to zoom. The touchpad is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor which enhances the security of the system and helps you log on to it.

Overall, the keyboard and the touchpad are the best with this laptop, and one can make great use of the productivity which is provided by Asus with this s510 laptop.

PERFORMANCE

The performance on this laptop is just fire with what it provides to its users. The laptop system comprises of Intel Core i7-7500U processor with 8 GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD and up to 1TB by paying some bucks extra. The laptop is powerful with these specifications installed on the system and opening a dozen applications at one time does not affect the system that much. There is absolutely no sign of lag or unresponsiveness as far as multitasking is involved. On the synthetic benchmark tests, the Geekbench 4, the system scored the overall score of 7,746 points which is almost equal to the ultraportable category average.

On spreadsheet macro benchmark test, the system transferred twenty-one thousand names and addresses in just 3 minutes and 32 seconds which is a lot faster than most of its competitor laptops in the market but unfortunately lags behind some mainstream laptops. Moving on to the storage devices, the 256GB SSD is capable of transferring 6GB of multimedia data in just 50 seconds at the rate of 94 megabytes per second which unfortunately lags behind the 232.3 Mbps ultraportable category average.  The performance on this system is precisely what must be expected by an Asus laptop, and the focus should be on target consumers who can be fulfilled with this type of performance in a laptop. Let’s talk further about the graphics on the system.

GRAPHICS

The graphics are the extension of the performance capabilities on a laptop. This laptop is fitted with an integrated Intel HD 620 graphics processor which packs enough power to play games on medium graphics settings without any lag. This graphics chip is powerful enough for editors to edit their 1080p HD videos and pictures, although the experience is smooth but as compared to high-end flagship model laptops, this may still seem a bit slow. On the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited synthetic benchmark test, the system scored 65,989 points which is respectable in the field and can be compared with most of its competitors on the 2018 line-up.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery on this laptop is next to pathetic. The battery on this laptop lasts for only about 5 hours and few minutes to be exact on a single charge. This type of performance on a laptop requires more battery life; this is where the laptop lacks validation and fails to be the perfect portable laptop. The lightweight chassis makes this laptop portable and free to use anywhere but the battery life kind of holds it back to its charger for everywhere you take it.

PRICE

The base model for the Asus Vivobook s510 consists of an Intel Core i5-7200U processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD along with an integrated Intel HD 620 graphics processor, and it is priced at $679 on Amazon.com/US. The price for the base mode according to me is worth what it offers to us as far as design and performance is concerned.

VERDICT

In the first look, I found the design of the Asus Vivobook s510 to be very attractive as popular as it is already. The premium design with the aluminum built is all what it takes to lure consumers, but under the lid, there is a 15-inch gorgeous bezel-less display which is waiting to be ‘wowed’ at. The display provides rich, bright colors and detailed pictures and looks impressive. There are flaws in the laptop like the pathetic battery life of 5 hours, makes it always attached to the charging cords and restrains to take the laptop out for a whole day spin. Performance wise, the laptop steals the show with the Intel Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM. All in all, this laptop is totally worth being on this list of top five and I recommend it to users for office or college purposes.

Acer Spin 5

Pros and Cons

The Acer Spin 5 is an excellent option if you’re cutting on some money to buy a decent laptop. Under $700, you are getting one of the brightest and colorful displays ever in an Acer laptop with a powerful performing system which is capable of performing any task without freezing or lagging. The Intel Core i5 does its job pretty well, but again there are certain issues with the laptop which you must be aware of before investing in this dope laptop. The design and performance of this laptop has a lot of value in the market and in the eyes of the critics. Let’s understand as to why this particular laptop deserves to be in this list of top five laptops under $700.

DESIGN

The design of this laptop is nothing close to being visually attractive. The crosspatch design on the lid makes you feel different and better than just a blank slate of metal with shiny Acer logo on it in the center. The color of this blank slate is ‘dark gray’ which is not as dark as you are thinking in your head right now. Unlike the Asus laptops mentioned above, under the lid, there are thick old school bezels which look ugly after seeing those stunning bezel-less HD displays. The deck on the laptop matches the color of the lid, but there are no patterns on it, it is just plane for your comfort and their ease. The keyboard is island style which is most common now in all regular laptops, but critics love it as it gets the keys, well-spaced and avoid unnecessary clamming of keys while typing. The Spin Logo is placed just above the keyboard in contrasting white, which looks fine. The design of this machine also includes a fingerprint sensor which is placed on the touchpad but unexpectedly with a different built material and a different color.  The measurements of this laptop are 12.8 x 8.9 x 0.6 inches, and it is also lightweight, carrying just 3.4 pounds. The overall design of this machine is not too visually attracting, but it looks classic and more importantly, premium.

PORTS

The connectivity options on this laptop are great! Acer has provided its users with all the necessary ports which a laptop requires in the year 2018 and that include the USB Type-C. Well, on the right sits a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack, an SD card reader slot, a USB 2.0 port and also a Kingston lock-slot. Similarly, on the left side, there is a power adapter port, an HDMI port, a USB Type-C port, and two USB 3.0 ports. The laptop consists of an abundance of ports which might come handy at some point of time. Acer has also made the laptop Future secure by adding a USB Type C port for faster data transfer options which is going to be trendy in the coming years.

DISPLAY

The laptop consists of a 13.3 inches display which is touch sensitive and contains a resolution of 1920 x 1080p, i.e. full HD. For a mainstream regular laptop, the display on this laptop is pretty rich in color and brightness. I was watching The Big Bang Theory on this laptop, and I could perfectly see the reds and the greens in Sheldon’s T-shirts with detailed picture quality and great contrast ratio.  On the lightmeter test, the display scored a total of 283 nits which happily surpasses the laptop category average of 223 nits as well as most of its competitors in the market. On the colorimeter test, the display covered 127 percent of the sRGB color Gamut which is better than the laptop category average of 94 percent. The display on this laptop is great as the touch registration is fast and very responsive. The display is one of the most loved components of this laptop, and I assume it is too.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD

The keyboard on this laptop is absolutely one of a kind. The keyboard is island styled, and the keys are perfectly spaced on the deck which avoids clamping while typing on the keys. The key-travel on the keys is as deep as 1.7 millimeters with the perfect amount of actuation force, i.e. 79 grams. The keys are not at all stiff and are very comfortable to type on. One can type for a considerable duration of time without experiencing any kind of fatigue. The keys have proven to be very responsive and snappy, and this is because on testing with the 10fastfingers.com benchmark typing test, I was able to type 117 words in a minute which is fast and better than my previous best of 103 words per minute.

Moving on to the track-pad, it measures, 4.1 x 2.5-inches in size and is exceptionally smooth and responsive as compared to some other laptops that I have worked on. The touchpad is big enough for your fingers to navigate throughout the screen and the touch registers rather rapidly. The multi-touch gestures like pinch to zoom and three fingers swipe are an experience in itself, and these complex gestures are a delight to use on this touchpad. The touchpad also consists of a fingerprint sensor on the top left which means that the small portion is unusable, but it hardly matters.

Both the touchpad and the keyboard work great and are incredibly responsive and fast. This laptop is best for any high school student or someone who needs to type a lot as a profession because the typing experience on this laptop is very comfortable.

PERFORMANCE

The Acer Spin 5 is equipped with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD storage. These specifications make the laptop a beast when it comes to performance. The multitasking experience on this laptop is entirely smooth and effortless. I tested the performance by opening 23 tabs of Google Chrome, a full HD video and Dirt 3 playing in the background; the impressive part was that I came across no lag or unresponsiveness from the system. On the Geekbench 4, a synthetic benchmark performance test, this laptop scored 11,636 which surpasses the 8,373 category average.  The 256GB SSD is fast enough to copy 5GB of mixed media files/data in just 30 seconds at the rapid rate of 183.2 MegaBytes per second. The Asus Zenbook reviewed before is slower than the Spin 5. On another test, the Excel Test, the system was capable of transferring twenty-two thousand names and addresses in just 1 minute and 43 seconds which is faster than the category average and most other competitors. The general performance on this laptop has passes all tests and earned respectable figures to prove its worth to be added to this list of best five laptops. Let’s check out the graphics on the system.

GRAPHICS

The Spin 5 sports an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 graphics chip which did perfectly fine on the 3D benchmark graphics test. The graphics card on this laptop is capable of performing basic elementary tasks like basic gaming or games with medium or low graphics settings. On testing with the Dirt 3, the system scored 56 frames per second which is greater than the 50 frames per second category average.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery life on this laptop is fairly well but not that great. The laptop runs for 7 hours and 36 minutes on a single charge which is not too much nor too less. The 7 hours of battery life makes this laptop a genuinely portable device not just by its sleek design and lightweight but its independence from the charging cable makes it truly portable.

PRICE

The Acer Spin 5 costs $587 on Amazon.com/US for the base model variant with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB Solid State Drive Storage. Upgrading your specifications with Intel Core i7 -8550U CPU can cost you some bucks, but it all depends on your requirements.

VERDICT

The decent Acer Spin 5 laptop has managed to get its way through the vast number of laptops, and the reason of that is mentioned in the above review. The slate-like classy design steals the show, and opening the lid to a bright, beautiful display is cherry on the cake. For a restraint amount of $700, this laptop is generally the best in all aspects, be it performance or looks. The Intel Core i5 definitely does its job on improving the performance on this laptop and the 8GB RAM speeds up the process. This laptop is better off for all kinds of people be it for official purposes or for students. A two-in-one laptop with an impressive touchscreen display under $700 is a good deal. The battery life on this laptop may be a little less as compared to some other competitors within the same price range, but it surely has some features better than them. I recommend this laptop with full support and positive reviews.

HP NOTEBOOK 15

Pros and Cons

The HP Notebook 15 is an affordable and cheap laptop which everyone can use for their own personal requirements. The design of this notebook laptop is impressively attractive and the display that it features produce great color and brightness contrasts, the images are detailed and sharp which improves the viewer’s experience while using the laptop. It also sports a 1TB SSD hard drive which can store all of your personal data and you may not have to use an external hard drive; it is fast and secure. The laptop is not all great, there are flaws which cannot be overseen, but it somehow manages to be popular amongst the public, and here it is making in the top five laptops. Let’s see what the Notebook 15 is all about.

DESIGN

The design of this laptop has an attractive modern look, despite being all plastic chassis. The diamond textured outer feels incredible and looks even more attractive with the black HP logo in the center having a great contrast with the silver of the body. The inside of the laptop, opening the lid, the deck is all blessed with a modern crosspatch design and is the same silver color as the outer. There are of course other color options in this laptop like black, red, white, blue and purple. The keyboard is black in color giving contrast to the silver in my review unit of the laptop, and it looks classy. The keyboard is not the usual Island style, but Chic-let keys dominate this keyboard. The display is full HD and consists of thick black bezels which surprisingly do not look that ugly on this one, having seen some really ugly bezel screens. The measurements of this laptop are 15.1 x 10 x 0.96 inches in size which makes it portable, and it is not that heavy either with only 4.78 pounds. The lightweight and great design makes you want to take the laptop along everywhere you go. The battery life will be discussed for true portability!

PORTS

This laptop is a modern day laptop with attractive design and great looks, but when it comes to connectivity options or ports, it is definitely an old-school laptop. The laptop consists of a DVD drive and a wide option of ports as well. On one side, there is a USB 3.0 port, an Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port and a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack with a Microphone output. On the opposite side, there is an SD card slot, one more USB 2.0 port, and DVD disc Drive and a noble lock slot too. All of these ports are fitted in one laptop which looks amazing with a student’s or a professional’s perspective.

The webcam fitted on the laptop is 720p HD, but it disappointed me in rather every way. The image wasn’t sharp enough and resulted in visual noise. The hair on my head was just a big black portion, and there was absolutely no detail in the picture quality. It’s okay to use the camera for important casual video calls, but I wouldn’t recommend the same for professional business calling.

DISPLAY

Hewlett Packard (HP) has always been a well-known brand in the laptop and desktop industry, and the reason is because of what they provide to their customers. Their laptops have quality, just like the Notebook 15 is blessed with a 1920x1080p full HD display. Most competitor laptops like the Toshiba Satellite with almost the same price gives 1366 x 768p displays with their laptops, unlike HP. On this laptop I watched ‘Young Sheldon’ and the details of Sheldon’s checked shirts and his haywire teeth, everything was detailed and sharp. The impressive color to brightness contrast was visible on this amazing display. On testing with the colorimeter, the display covered 70 percent of the sRGB color gamut which is at par with other competitor laptops under the same category. On the DeltaE color accuracy test, the display was able to manage a score of 3.1; ideal should be 0. Next, we did was the brightness test where the laptop emits 225 nits of brightness at its maximum which is close to the laptop category average of 250nits. Overall, the display on this one is impressive but less vivid according to the colorimeter. Let’s check out the typing experience.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD

The keyboard on this laptop features Chiclet keys which are amazing as far as typing experience is concerned. The key travel on the keys is barely 1.1 millimeters which is just fine making the typist bottoming out with every click. Once you are used to this keyboard, then there is no looking back, you can type faster and better with only a little practice. The keys are well spaced and made me type faster; I could feel the responsiveness of the keys as I typed. The deck where the palm rests is very comfortable with almost no fatigue experienced by me in long hours of typing. There is no flex anywhere on the deck or on the keyboard which reveals the quality of the material used by HP on this laptop. On the 10fastfingers.com benchmark typing test, I could type 113 words per minute which is almost as close to my typing best with 104 words per minute. The keys are back-lit which is common in almost all laptops in this age, and it will help you type even during the night.

Next is the drag and drop component, the touchpad. It measures 4.8 x 1.7-inches in size and is exceptionally smooth for a touchpad. It is responsive and a little speedy as compared to other laptops. The buttons are physical on this touchpad which produce a satisfying click sound and works just fine. The touchpad is neither too large nor too small; it is perfect to fit my fingers and navigate across the desktop. The three finger swipes and all the other multi-touch gestures are smooth and give a great experience and impression to the user.

Both the above-mentioned components are the main reasons why people tend to buy this laptop so often. The incredible experience is just amazing, and I recommend this laptop to every person who does a lot of typing work.

PERFORMANCE

As we all know that the Notebook 15 is a budget laptop under $700 and is fairly doing great in aspects like design and comfort. Now, under the hoodie, it is powered by an Intel Core i5-6200U processor which is clocked at 3.2GHz in combination with 8GB of RAM and 1TB hard drive storage. These specifications make this laptop a beast in terms of performance capabilities. In my test which consisted of opening 12 chrome tabs with 1080p HD video playing and open Photo editing on Adobe Lightroom in process, I did not notice any kind of lag or any sign of unresponsiveness from the system. The performance is relatively good and perfect for intermediate users. On testing with the synthetic Geekbench 3 benchmark performance test, the system managed to score 5,675 points which lags a little behind the laptop category average of 6,237 points.  As far as the speed is concerned, the 1TB hard drive vrooms the system with 5,400 rpm. It is capable of copying 4.98GB of media files in just 2 minutes and 50 seconds at the rate of 29.88 MBps. This transfer speed is faster than the category average of this type of laptops but is still slower than most of its competitors. On the spreadsheet test or the Excel test, the system copied twenty-one thousand names and addresses in just 5 minutes approximate which is again better and faster than the laptop category average. The overall performance on this one is better than most other laptops under the same category. It is capable of performing any task with great efficiency and smoothness.

GRAPHICS

This laptop is apparently not a gaming laptop, although it has the powerful integrated Intel HD 520 Graphics processor inside, it cannot be used for a heavy duty gaming session. On the 3DMark graphics performance benchmark test, the system scored 51,837 points which makes it evident that it can run visually strong and also for intermediate level of gaming, like playing games on low or medium graphics settings. The 1080p screen supports the graphics on this system elegantly, and it overall makes the performance much better.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life is something which makes a laptop actually ‘portable’ in literal sense. The lightweight design on this laptop makes it user-friendly and portable, but the battery life restrains it in many ways. The battery on the Notebook 15 lasts for approximately 5 hours and 23 minutes on a single charge which means that you will have to carry that charger every time you take your laptop out for a spin. Especially for college going students, this is a main concern to them. I would suggest this laptop to people who want to keep their laptop in their office or at home only.

PRICE

The price of the HP Notebook 15 for an Intel Core i5-6200U processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD with an Intel HD 520 Graphics processor, is $627 on Amazon.com/US. This cost is worthy of what it delivers to its users in terms of design, display, and performance.

VERDICT

As we know that the Intel Core i5 processor is not the fastest in the market, but it provides with smooth multitasking and efficient performance with it. The display on the HP Notebook 15 is absolutely stunning and gorgeous just like it’s design-attractive and lightweight. HP has left no stone unturned when it comes to connectivity and ports; it even has a DVD player which is literally old school stuff which you won’t find in the mainstream laptops of this age. The typing experience is fast and comfortable, and with absolutely no flex to be found anywhere on the deck. HP has its quality standing tall like a rock. It is a perfect laptop for business usage and home usage, but for students, it might not be what they desire. This is because of the pathetic 5 hours of battery life which sucks on this laptop. Other than this, there is absolutely no flaw in the system and at $627; it is not a great deal. There are upgraded versions of this laptop as well with an Intel Core i7 and more RAM, but that will exceed the $700 limitation. Otherwise, this laptop is a must buy.

CONCLUSION

Laptops ranging from $500 to $700 start having a quality design and premium feel! Hence, choosing from such a wide dynamic is tough, not just for you but for us as critics and reviewers also. Your laptop carries all your personal data stored, be it your official work or any account details or any form of personal data. Thus, it is an essential device; it connects you to the rest of the world and more importantly, the Internet. Speaking of internet, it has been a source of information for all of us since the very beginning of the digital era. Now, the situation suggests that we can even make payments and money transfer online with our laptops or mobile phones. Under the price limit of $700, you can easily purchase an elementary gaming laptop, a decent laptop for general and fundamental computing or even a business laptop in some cases, under all these categories, there are hundreds and thousands of laptops for us to choose from. Will you do it? Reviewing each laptop to see which one suits your requirements best? The answer is NO! Because no one has so much spare time to search all of this information on their own. This is where our expertise comes into use; we have personalized laptops examined and analyzed one by one and placed categorically for you to follow. In this list of top five laptops under $700, I went through so many laptops to see which one is worth being on the list.

Under $700, you can find a tremendous ultra-thin, ultraportable laptop with durable design and phenomenal performance. These ultra-portables can be easy to carry around all day and work from wherever you like. These types of laptops are usually preferred by students of high school, their busy schedule and urge to be updated all the way is dependable on these thin and sleek laptops. College assignments, projects, homework, research paper, etc. one can do anything with these elegant machines.

The next best thing which can be bought is the elementary gaming laptops which are high built quality as well but maybe less on some components, like sound or display quality or something, this is to cut the cost while giving you a gaming laptop. These laptops need a lot of RAM and performance upgrades actually to run smooth. Hence, under this price range, you can get elementary gaming laptops of excellent quality and battery life as well.

Another category is of the business laptops which are expensive to produce, so at a price limit, you can get basic business laptops. These laptops have an expensive built quality to be tough, spill proof and rugged, etc. So, at this range, you may not get the best, but you can definitely get one for yourself.

My personal best under this list of top five laptops is the Dell XPS 13 simply because of its great design, colorful and vibrant display, the strong and robust performance that it delivers and most importantly the best battery life that it has. There is a cut down on ports to make the profile thin and sleek; some may be fine with it, others may not be, it’s a subjective decision.  The full aluminum chassis and amazing typing experience are the reasons for this being my personal best.
