Best Laptop for Designers

BEST LAPTOPS FOR DESIGNERS

INTRODUCTION

There are many different business companies these days, and every business company needs a graphic designer. Companies and organizations in every industry need a graphic designer these days. If not under professional businesses, freelance designers are really on the top of their game these days and earning enough money to pursue this as a career. Brands are hiring graphic designers for them to create a beautiful, attractive and eye-catching logo; they are willing to pay huge chunks of cash for that job. However, to deliver the best work, a designer has to have the best tools — the only tool that a graphic designer needs is a good laptop. A graphic designer only requires two things; a laptop and creativity, to develop his best work ever.

When it comes to graphics and animations and video editing, one needs to have some enhanced specifications for their laptops to function in an enhanced and productive manner. One definitely needs skills and professional tools to be the best at what they do, for this they require the best programs and powerful laptops to run those programs. The area of choice really matters in graphic designing as selecting amongst so many options, really needs good eyes to visualize the required concept and how it will look after completion. Technology in the form of laptops needs to be apt for this job to faster the editing process and avoid delay. The smoothness in the work process has proven to be less frustrating and more productive which is why you require a powerful and seem-less laptop for the job. The specifications which can be enhanced in a laptop can be the RAM, hard –drive capacity, preferred graphics processor and CPU processor. All of these customizations can help you chose the best laptop for the job and reduce the effort so that you enjoy the experience and work doesn’t seem like it.

A graphic designer’s laptop must be a heavy duty one which can support large graphics software and applications. Only with high specifications and a good graphics card can the work experience be amazing and worthwhile. This doesn’t mean that one has to be a billionaire’s child to become a graphic designer, No! There are budget options as well in the range of different laptops available in the market of different brands. To all my readers, I would recommend Amazon.com/US for buying laptops as they have fantastic offers and discounts, plus their products are genuine and under warranty as well.

The below-mentioned laptops are the best graphics laptops which are available in the market on the 2018 line-up.

  • Apple MacBook Pro 15”
  • Microsoft Surface Book 2
  • Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 6.
  • Dell XPS 15

APPLE MacBook PRO

Image result for APPLE MacBook PRO

Pros and Cons

Stunning and speedy performance from the good looking sleek and stylish MacBook Pro 15 inch is something you can expect from Apple, Big time! With stunning graphics, professional graphic designers have recommended this laptop over your price limits.

DESIGN

The design of the infamously famous Apple MacBook Pro is almost the same as its predecessors from the year 2017 and 2016 models. The body is entirely built from Aluminium and comes in classic Apple colors; Space Grey and Silver. The laptop features tapered edges and thick bezels but never compromises on the placement of its front webcam; it is always placed on the top bezel in the center which is perfectly great for where it is supposed to be. Unlike the MacBook Pros, Huawei MacBook X Pro which is again a flagship laptop has its webcam placed at the bottom bezel which is not so suited to most of the users.

The laptop weighs 4 pounds which is a bit heavier than the MacBook Pro 13 inch model, and it measures 13.8 x 9.5 x 0.6 inches in size. The laptop is thinner and lighter than most of the other company’s flagship laptops, like the Microsoft Surface Book 2, Dell XPS 15 and also the HP Spectre x360.

DISPLAY

The display on the MacBook Pro is 15.4 inches for this particular variant, not ignoring the option for a 13-inch variant as well. The picture quality on this is one is absolute ‘Retina,’ pun intended! The screen that Apple Offers with its Pro series can be a major plus point for its buyers because a display this stunning is hard to find. For graphic designers, it is a dream because the display experience with this one is absolutely the best and as Apple says for its iPhones, I would say, “If you don’t have a MacBook Pro, You don’t have a MacBook Pro.” The resolution of the screen is 2880 x 1800p; one of the world’s renowned artists once commented that, while watching an NBA match on his MacBook Pro 15 inch, he could feel as if he was in the first row, “you won’t believe how real it feels to see every drop of sweat dripping from their bodies, incredible!”  Not just this, Apple with its new MacBook Pro series has featured what they call the “True Tone Display.” This feature adjusts the color intensity on display with the actual surrounds of the person. For example- If you have a hard white light flashing in your office, your MacBook display will automatically adjust to warmer, more comforting color which is a bloomer for your eyes, so ‘less strain more work’ is what Apple Wants, I guess. While working on your graphic designs and prototypes, this feature helps a lot and professional graphics workers have applauded Apple for this useful feature. In respect to the colorimeter tests, the laptop display produces around 119 percent sRGB spectrum, which is mind-blowing and higher than the 110 laptop average. Why forget the brightness levels, the maximum brightness on this laptop would be 354 nits which are again more elevated than the HP Spectre x360 and the Dell XPS 15. The viewing angles remain stronger than ever, and it beats the other competitors in this aspect as well.  Overall, the best display a laptop can ever be blessed with.

PORTS

The laptop offers four USB C 3.0 thunderbolt ports. These ultra-fast ports are everything you will require in the coming future. It is everything the standard laptop ports own, but with increasingly high data transfer speeds. Don’t be surprised; it also connects a 4K monitor with a single USB type-C port. For designers, I think it will be a perfect fit as they don’t require a lot of ports, even if they do, markets are full of high-speed connectors and dongles for on the go port multiplications.

KEYBOARD AND TRACK-PAD

Apple Keyboards have been the best since Apple started manufacturing laptops. The world loves typing on those perfectly spaced keys with back-lighting. Now, the status of the MacBook Pro line-up is that Apple has updated its design since the 2016 MacBook pro, switching to the all-new keys with ‘butterfly mechanism.’ Also, to make butterfly keyboards better, Apple has inserted a sleek membrane underneath each key, to make the typing quitter and save the keys from unwanted dust and debris. This membrane helps the keyboard functionality to last longer and prevents the ‘stuck keys’ issue which many users have a complaint about in the previous models. The keyboard is perfect, and I genuinely believe that it is the best keyboard I’ve ever worked on. I scored 81 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test which is better than ever. The travel on the keys is less with just 0.7 millimeters. Overall, the typing on the keys feel faster, and the keys are very responsive to what the critics have said about the laptop.

In addition to the keyboard, come the unbelievably large track-pad measuring 6.3 x 3.9-inches in size. It is a pressure sensitive track-pad which Apple calls the ‘Force-touch track-pad.‘ The keys on the track-pad don’t move; it is the haptic feedback mechanism which stimulates a click feel on the multi-gesture track-pad. Again, extremely responsive and smooth with the gestures!

PERFORMANCE

The performance on this laptop is as good as it looks. The review unit featured an Intel Core i9-8950HK processor with 32GB of RAM which accounts for massive performances with the smoothest of commands. The speed on this laptop is something which most users don’t require but especially for a graphic designer and video editors, ‘you will enjoy this speed and feel ten times more productive than you already are!’ This laptop can run very smoothly without any bumps on the road, and the experience is magnificent for graphics people. On the Geekbench 4 benchmark performance test, the laptop scored 23,138 points which is sky-rocketing as compared to other flagships. There is entirely no comparison for this level of performance. The 2TB SSD along with such powerful processor and 32 gigs of RAM makes the laptop worth the price. The transfer speed on this laptop is 2,600 MBps which is ahead of the 415 MBps laptop average (*laughing tears*).

Let’s see what the graphics have in store.

GRAPHICS

The graphics on the MacBook Pro 15 inch are just flawless featuring the AMD Radeon Pro 560X Graphics Processor with 4GB of memory. On the Cinebench R15 benchmark test, the laptop scored 110 frames per second which give fierce competition to the Dell XPS 15 and the HP specter x360.  The laptop is just perfect for any graphics designer searching for a laptop. Apple has one thing that everybody is convinced about, it is about not trusting the numbers with Apple products; go with the experience, try the device in your nearest Apple stores, and you’ll understand the difference between a MacBook and all its other competitors. The gaming on the laptop is not impressive when compared to other laptops, it is because of a simple reason that Apple is not a gaming laptop, it comes under the professional laptop category, and it tops that category with utmost grace and dignity.

HEAT

The heating on the 15 inch MacBook Pro is minimal, but can increase some temperature when being excessively used. Pushing this laptop up to the very end may heat up the system a little to let you know the amount of over usage. The heating test on the MacBook Pro included watching full HD 1080p video on the system for twenty minutes and then searching the heated areas on the system with a thermal detector tool. The temperature recorded on the touchpad was 85.8 degrees and the centre of the keyboard which is between the H and G keys recorded a temperature of 92.4 degrees. The third area where the temperature is tested was on the underside of the laptop which recorded a temperature of 93.4 degrees. All of the above temperature tests have been recorded and proved to be within the comfort area of the laptop.

PRICE

Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch costs more than an average earner’s pocket. The laptop is extremely overwhelmed with its price tag of $2,789 on Amazon.com/US for basic configurations of 6-Core Intel Core i7 processor clocked at the 2.6GHz processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.

VERDICT

The $2,789 expensive aluminum beast laptop by Apple is a masterpiece and the best gear for Graphic designers. Stunning design and the smart display is a combination that will make you want it, but the laptop is not pocket-friendly. The graphics are on par with many different flagship laptops in the market, but Apple with its powerful and effortless performance packs the best deal for its users. The laptop is thin and light with snappy keyboard and a force-touch track-pad which makes its functionality even efficient. All in all, this laptop is one of the best machines with its powerful processing speeds and an ideal choice for graphic designers. I would rate this laptop a 9/10 based on looks and performance.

MICROSOFT SURFACE BOOK 2

Image result for MICROSOFT SURFACE BOOK 2

Pros and Cons

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 sports an innovative design, with a clean slate look and a shiny Microsoft logo in the center.  This laptop also owns a bright, colorful display for every graphic designer’s perfect work experience. Including a stylus, Microsoft opens up a significant new aspect of functionality which blends perfectly with Windows 10. Not just this, this laptop is equipped with all the standard connectivity ports for diversity and has a long-lasting battery life which makes it portable as well. The only downside I faced was the lack of Thunderbolt 3.0 port and the load of money for which it costs.

DESIGN

The design of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 has not changed drastically since the last generation Microsoft Surface Book 1. It looks the same, and one won’t be able to differentiate once we keep them side by side. The Fulcrum hinge does not allow the laptop to be appropriately closed just like its predecessor which Microsoft doesn’t seem to care about. The most popular feature of this design is the ‘detach to tablet’ feature which allows you to convert your laptop into a tablet without any inconvenience. The color scheme of the laptop is also the same gray magnesium with a glossy metal logo in the center. The laptop also sports a ‘pixel-sense display’ what they call it, which is a 13.5-inch display with 3000 x 2000p resolutions. The keyboard and trackpad are also the same design as last Gen; clean slate design with white keys which people refer to as the classy look. The laptop measures 12.3 x 9.1 x 0.9 inches and weighs 3.62 pounds. Overall, the design is the same as the last gen Surface Book, and it is close to perfect, people like it!

PORTS

Talking about the ports, Microsoft has added almost all the standard connectivity options. On the left side sits two USB 3.1 ports and an SD card reader, similarly on the right side; a Surface Connect port and a USB Type C port for the fastest data transfer speeds. At the bottom of the tablet, there is another Surface connect port which enables you to charge your laptop independently as a tablet. Not forgetting the standard 3.5mm headphone jack which is in a kind of awkward position here, it sits on the right side of the tablet, which means that one has to remove the tablet from the fulcrum hinge and detach it from the keyboard to be able to use it. Microsoft, what is the deal with you?

Users still complaint that for such minor up-gradation and the addition of USB-C, Microsoft should have added the Thunderbolt 3.0 port for faster data transfer speeds and majorly to keep up with its competitors.

DISPLAY

The 13.5-inch display on the Surface Book 2 is fantastic! The screen sports an aspect ratio of 3:2 and the resolution of 3000 x 2000p. The picture quality on display is sharp, vibrant and colorful as compared to the last generation Surface Book. When tested on the colorimeter, the display covered approximately 131 percent of the sRGB color Gamut which is higher than the 102 percent laptop average. Regarding brightness, 374 nits of brightness is produced by the Surface Book 2 which is higher than most of its flagship competitors and also the ultraportable average of 285 nits. Microsoft calls this display a ‘PixelSense Display’ which is similar to Apple’s ‘True tone Display.’

KEYBOARD AND TRACK-PAD

The keyboard on the Surface Book’s has always been one of my favorites because of a few simple reasons. The chick-let styled keys are lovely and are perfectly spaced for better typing. 1.2 millimeters of key-travel is perfect for an average user who is in the habit of using other conventional keyboards. The actuation force on the keys to be applied is 70 grams which are again very precise.  The keys are snappier and clicky, very responsive with the perfect click sound which makes you want to type more and more. The typing is fast because on testing with 10fastfingers.com typing test, I scored a whopping 122 words per minute which is my best till date and the keyboard can be a significant attracting feature of this laptop.

The touchpad on the laptop measures 4.1 x 2.7 inches in size. The touch on the track-pad is smooth and extremely responsive even to minor touches. Microsoft has enabled the track-pad to work as per the specially designed precision drivers for better performance and better gesture recognition. Overall, the Surface Book 2’s keyboard and the track-pad combination is as perfect as it looks and performs.

PERFORMANCE

This laptop features a powerful Intel Core i7-8650U Processor in combination with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. The Surface Book 2 is a performance beast in the actual sense, it is a pro computer when it comes to multitasking like I opened 20 Internet Explorer tabs with a VLC video playing back and GTA Vice City opened in the background, and it all seemed effortless and smooth. There was absolutely no hint of lag anywhere in my session. On testing with the Geekbench 4 Benchmark performance test, the laptop scored 12,231 points which surpass the ultraportable average of 7,787 points. The performance seemed pretty solid to me, but on papers, the Geekbench results lost to Dell XPS 13 scoring 14,157 points and few other competitive laptops. Not only this, the laptop is extremely fast at data transferring as well; It succeeded in transferring 5GB of mixed media files in literally 2 seconds at the speed of 205.9MBps which is quick enough to be at par with the Dell XPS 13 and HP Spectre x360 at some level; actually it’s a bit slower (buck up Microsoft!).

GRAPHICS

When it comes to Graphic designers, all they care about is the graphics card and performance of the laptops. Well, to all the designers out there, this laptop is safe to go for, and it makes you productive and creative with its seamless functionality. This laptop is fitted with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Graphics Processor and 2GB of VRAM as well which is a great deal for a 2 in 1 laptop. These graphics configuration can play quite a few games but on a lower setting than usual. The laptop performance is substantial enough to run programs and applications for graphic designing purposes, but when it comes to games, it lags a little. This is only because, just like I said it ‘NOT A GAMING LAPTOP,’ this is good enough reason for you to think of it as a professional and creative laptop. If you want a gaming laptop along with the designing capabilities, you should go for Alienware; it is a good brand. Anyways, on testing with the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark test, the Surface Book scored about 135,2779 points which is way ahead of the ultraportable average of 59,940 points. It is important to note the fact that, unlike the Surface Book 2, all the other competitors, such as the HP Spectre x360 and the Dell XPS 13 use Intel’s integrated HD 620 graphics which is not as good as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. Overall, it is an excellent choice for graphic designers but not a good one for gamers.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery on the Surface Book 2 is a mess, honestly! If you want the complete advantage of the battery, you need the display to be attached with the keyboard through the fulcrum hinge; only then the laptop will give you the remarkable long lasting battery life of 13 hours and few minutes. When you use the tablet mode, the laptop will give you only 3 to 4 hours of battery life, which is not convincing and many critics and customers feel that Microsoft should do something about it as it is the only reason people refrain from buying this excellent piece of machine.

PRICE

The Surface Book 2 13 inches with Intel Core i5 processor accompanied with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD is priced at $829.99 on Amazon.com/US. This price has dropped now since the time it has been launched. It also comes in higher configurations and higher prices.

VERDICT

The Surface Book 2 is the same two-in-one laptop with an addition to USB type C port which is a blessing to this new version of the laptop. This laptop is comparably expensive than most of its competitors in the market, but as per the critics, it is worthy of the cost to provide a beautiful uni-body design with long-lasting battery life and a bright and smart display with features like the Microsoft’s PixelSense. The stylus adds up to the list of features as the display is touchscreen.  This laptop is the perfect device for graphic designers as it provides a robust performance and graphics which gives the users, the experience they are looking for. I would give this laptop an 8/10 score based on performance and looks.

Lenovo Ideapad Flex 6

Image result for Lenovo Ideapad Flex 6

Pros and cons

The Lenovo Ideapad flex 6 is more than an average laptop with speedy fast performance and good looks. Lenovo’s laptops have always been trusted by its customers for their sturdy design and fast performance and out of the world graphics. The design is unique and attractive to most users out there. Not just this, the laptop has a snappy keyboard and an incredibly responsive touchpad as well. Let’s discuss these features in detail and find out if this laptop fits in the bag of a graphic designer.

DESIGN

The design of the Flex 6 is very sturdy and advanced for its competitions. It sports a captivating look and is capable of 360-degree rotation of the display. The laptop comes in the classic black onyx color with matte finishing along with metallic hinges. This metal and matte black look of the laptop looks a class apart from the other monotone laptops. The laptop measures 0.7 inches and weighs 3.6 pounds which is lighter than the HP Envy x360 15 and slimmer than the Acer Spin 5 laptop. The deck of the laptop is brushed aluminum, and the chassis is 40 percent glass in polycarbonate plastic fiber covering. Overall, the design of the laptop looks beautiful and looks perfect with students and professionals. The keyboard Features Island styled keys which are perfectly spaced, and the touchpad is equally attractive and responsive. Not just this, the design of the laptop includes a stylus pen which is known as the ‘Lenovo Active pen’ for the creativity struck personality inside you and the designers as well. The laptop sports some connectivity ports and also a fingerprint sensor placed at the bottom right of the laptop for securing your personal and professional files saved in your computer. The design is entirely in trend, and it makes the laptop desirable even without considering its performance capabilities which is an absolute plus point.

DISPLAY

The display on the Flex 6 is 14 inches in measurement with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p which is standard for laptops under this category.  The picture quality on display looks spectacular with vibrant and bright pictures. The color tone and the hues are in synchronization with the set brightness levels which add up to the brilliance of the display. The 14-inch display lacks an anti-reflective coating which may bother the user in broad daylight conditions and brightly lit rooms. The light reflects on the display causing glares and un-comfort to the eyes. On testing with the benchmark colorimeter test, the display covered about 83 percent of the sRGB Colour Gamut. This range is sadly below the ultraportable average of 114 percent, but the brightness and contrasts make up for that, maybe a little. Talking about the brightness, the laptop generates 239 nits of brightness which is brighter than most of its other competitors but on paper is less than the ultraportable average of 300 nits. Nothing to be disappointed about the scores on paper, the laptop has a perfect touch-screen enabled display with smooth and responsive actions to the touch commands which even perfectly runs the Windows 10’s edge-swipe gestures. The display is a ten on ten when it comes to color, brightness and touch sensitivity.

PORTS

Talking about the connectivity options for the laptop, on the left side sits a USB 3.0 port with an HDMI port, a USB type-C port and a headphone jack combined with a microphone.

On the right side of the laptop sits the power button on the top, below which is the security lock slot, another USB 3.0 port, and an SD card reader which is an unexpected addition to the list. Along with these connectivity ports, there is also a fingerprint sensor placed on the bottom right side of the laptop which is very quick in response and add up to the list of features.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

The Ideapad flex 6 offers a robust experience when it comes to typing. The keys are well spaced, and typing is snappier and responsive than many of its other competitors. On testing with the 10fastfingers.com benchmark typing test, I could score an outstanding score of 78 words per minute which is not that far from my personal best of 84 words. Talking about the key-travel, the keys offer only 1.3 millimeters travel which is subtle enough as most of the high-end laptops have approximately the same specification. The typing is also very much affected by the actuation force of the keys, in this case, it is 80grams, and it is accurate. The keyboard is very comfortable and flawless when it comes to typing.

On the contrary, the touchpad on the laptop is also very smooth and touch sensitive. The touchpad measures 4.1 x 2.7-inches in size, and it is placed in the center of the deck. The touch is registered very accurately and it there is absolutely no lag in navigating through the window. The touchpad also recognizes touch gestures for special commands which are incredible in this Lenovo machine.  Switching between applications is smooth and effortless.

Overall, the keyboard and touchpad on this one are incredible, and the combination serves more than we can expect from a laptop of this price range.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood, the laptop offers great above average performance and is as good as it should be. The performance on this laptop serves every detail that a graphic designer should expect from his main on-the-go work gear. The reviewed model of the laptop featured an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor, in combination with 8 GB of RAM which is sky-rocketing in function. I dare notice any lag or pause or breakage in the performance chain of this laptop even while running 20 Mozilla Firefox tabs with VLC player in the background and several other applications. The switching between applications is as smooth as any high-end laptop. On testing with the Geekbench 4 benchmark performance test, the laptop scored 12,145 points which out-passes the ultraportable laptop average.  Not just on paper, the machine is damn fast when it comes to processing speeds; the laptop can copy 5GB of mixed media files in approximately 19 to 20 seconds which is fast at 155MBps, but unfortunately, it could not reach the ultraportable average speed of 291 MBps. The storage on the laptop is 256GB PCIe SSD which is responsible for such fast transfer speeds.

Not forgetting the graphics on the device, the laptop is equipped with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 card, and for the higher priced variant, it is a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX130 GPU which when tested with the 3DMark Icestorm Unlimited Benchmark graphics test scored 107,734 points. This graphic score beats most of its average category laptops which have a score of approximately 86,873 points. These graphics specifications make this laptop an apt device for graphic designing and all sorts of massive multimedia productivity.

Overall, the performance on this laptop is way above expectations, and all of these features add up to the list of pros on this device.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery on this laptop lasted for only 6 hours and 50 minutes, which is less than what we could have expected from Lenovo. The charger has to tag along every time you decide to take the laptop out for a spin which is not a good sign. There are other competitor laptops within the same category, and they provide such excellent battery life; a significant point for users, to think before buying this laptop.

PRICE

The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 6 with configurations of 14-inch touchscreen 2 in 1 display, Intel Core i7 (8th generation) 8550U Quad-core processor clocked at 1.80 GHz, 16GB of RAM in combination with 256GB SSD is priced at $973.46 on Amazon.com/us.

VERDICT

The attractive design of this laptop is the first thing that comes to mind while thinking about the buying options. The performance compliments the looks with such powerful graphics options and speedy SSD. The keyboard and touchpad are of major attraction with snappy keys and smooth touchpad. The only major drawback that I find on this laptop is its battery life. The battery life on the laptop could have been better and made it the perfect option to carry around and work freely for the designing purposes. The graphics and performance of this laptop make this laptop an ideal choice for graphic designers. I rate this laptop an 8/10 based on looks and performance.

DELL XPS 15

Image result for DELL XPS 15

Pros and Cons

The Dell XPS 15 is a sturdy laptop with dependable performance specifications and some excellent features that make it worthy to be added to this list. It has an all-day battery life with a bright, colorful screen, minimalist design and everything great. This laptop has a lot of potential for designing purposes, let’s check out its pros and cons in a specific manner.

DESIGN

The Design of the XPS 15 is nearly almost identical to its predecessors which may not be a bad thing because of their modern slim and sleek look. The basic old aluminum lid along with a soft dark interior makes it as beautiful as the XPS 13 and XPS 14. The only thing that you will find on the lid is the shiny Dell logo placed exactly in the center, and it looks class!  On opening the lid, you will see a similar look from the outside, which is the black carbon fiber. The laptop even has a dual purpose power button which surprisingly also works as a fingerprint sensor for securing your most prized possession. The laptop features a 15.6-inch large display which is pressed to the corner with the InfinityEdge bezels making them look thin.

The laptop dimensions are 14.1 x 9.3 x 0.5-0.7 inches in size and weigh around 4.22 pounds which is still a slimmer option for most of the designers out there.  It is still ahead of many laptops regarding design but lags in some cases too. The overall design of the laptop is brilliant.

DISPLAY

As Dell has been generous with its users regarding display, it has provided us with three different display options; a 4K display, an Ultra HD touchscreen display, and a 1080p non-touch display which is the basic variant.  The display offers a resolution of 1920 x 1080p which is capable of producing vibrant, bright deep colors which are evident in the default wallpaper of the XPS 15. While watching videos and movies, the picture quality is detailed, and one can see proper fine strands of hair and brightness to contrast ratio is perfect for the best experience. On testing with the colorimeter benchmark test, the display could cover 117 percent of the sRGB Colour Gamut which is a nice coverage keeping in mind the 1080p non-touch display. If you want a better display, one can opt for the 4K display option for some little extra bucks. Moving on to another test, the brightness test, the laptop scored 377nits which perfectly surpasses the 345nits ultraportable category average. The display is more luminous than most of its other competitors in the market which is under the same category. Overall, the display on the laptop is just perfect even if you go for the primary 1080p non-touch display.

PORTS

Dell has provided us with a good range of connectivity ports which allows a designer or a gamer to use it as a broader scope for connections. On the right-hand side sits a USB Type-A port, an SD card reader, a battery status indicator and a noble lock slot. Similarly on the right side; there is another USB 3.1 Type-A port, a Thunderbolt 3.0 Port, a headphone jack 3.5mm, an HDMI 2.0 port and a port for AC Adapter.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

The laptop consists of a smart island-style keyboard with perfectly spaced keys throughout the deck. The keys are snappier than the XPS 13 and offer a better experience. The essential travel on the keys is 1.3millimeters which is just fine for a laptop. Not just the travel is perfect; the actuation force on the keys to be applied is even better, 70grams of actuation force which adds up to the perfect combination of bounce and travel to the island styled. On testing with the benchmark typing test, the 10fastfingers.com; I could score an average of 73words per minute which is not my highest, but not my worst either. There is one thing about this keyboard that the error rate is near about negligible, which proves that this laptop has an excellent keyboard.

Moving on to the counterpart, the touchpad:- The touchpad on this laptop is better than I expected. It is made up of plastic and is placed in the center of the keyboard. It measures 4 x 3.1-inches in size which is neither too big nor too small, but it is small! My experience with the touchpad says that there was no problem in navigating throughout the window and sliding into different applications was easy. The touch registration was good, and the touchpad had no problem in understanding the multi-touch gestures.

Overall, the keyboard and touchpad combination on the XPS 15 is impressive with no complaints, You will have a great experience typing on this. Let’s see what the performance has in store for us.

PERFORMANCE

The slim, smart and sleek laptop has some severe performance packed in a nutshell for its users. Under the hood, this laptop is a total beast, and that is the reason why it sells. A 2.2-GHz Intel Core i7-8750H processor powers the Dell XPS 15 variant with the primary 1080p non-touch display in combination with 16GB of RAM which is some dangerous, deadly combination for a crackle of performance. In my experience this laptop does not hang or lag in any which way; multi-tasking is swift and smooth without any sign of load or heaviness. Testing on the Geekbench 4, the results were pretty amazing; the laptop scored 19,780 points which have proudly surpassed the ultraportable category average. The laptop has the edge over some popular devices such as the Notebook X, Spectre x360 and the Surface Book as well. Moving on to some other tests; the hard drive test resulted in the 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD writing 5GB of mixed media files with 225.6 megabytes per second in just a matter to 20 seconds which is very quick regarding copying speeds. There are other competition laptops which have done equally better in the hard drive tests, and the situation is won by the one and only Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch.

GRAPHICS

The performance of this laptop is blessed with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q Graphics Processing unit with 4GB of VRAM which is excellent. The XPS 15 is nothing like a gaming laptop but can surely punch in some game because of its high-performance abilities. Basic gaming or entry-level gaming is possible on this laptop with low to medium graphics setting which is sad but is workable for an occasional or non-gamer. Having the frame rates of 190fps on the Dirt 3 benchmark game is better than the ultra-portable laptop average and most of its competition. The best feature about this laptop is that, when your dedicated GPU is not in use or is not required to run, the laptop automatically switches to its integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU via Nvidia’s Optimus technology which saves a lot of battery life and is a wonderful and much-appreciated feature on this laptop.

All in all, the specifications on the Dell XPS 15 are damn tremendous and worthy of being in the list. The high performance and graphics specs make this laptop a perfect choice for designers, and this laptop will provide the graphic designers with the best of experience without is evident any sign of lag.

BATTERY LIFE

The laptop lasted for 11 hours and 57 minutes which can approximately be counted as 12 hours of battery life. This laptop has a battery life of a full day irrespective of its robust performance specifications. It is evident that the variant with 4K display lasted for only 7 hours and 49 minutes on the same battery test which is understandable because of its high power consumption. The battery life of the XPS 15 is commendable.

PRICE

The basic variant of the XPS 15 with a 2.2-GHz Intel Core i7-8750H CPU along with 16GB RAM, 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD, an integrated  Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU with dedicated  Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q GPU with 4GB of VRAM on the device is priced at $1,535.40 only on Amazon.com/us.

VERDICT

From the looks of the laptop, with such classic frame up to the battery life, this laptop is at the top of its game, and there is entirely no reason for the user not to pick this one, only other than the price constraints of course. This laptop is a total beast when it comes to performance; the graphics are the best, with the wonderful switch of GPUs to save battery life. This laptop will be the perfect choice for any graphic designer, and I bet upon the best of his experience regarding speed, typing, display, performance, and battery life as well. This laptop is an absolute machine, and I would rate this one at 8/10.

CONCLUSION

To conclude my article, I would say that it is not easy for a graphic designer to choose a laptop from such vast options available. It is tough but equally important as well. There are a lot of thoughts mumbling on the mind of a designer while choosing a laptop which suits best with his/her work profile. Graphic designing is a creative job, and one has to be on-the-go because no one knows what drives our inspiration or creativity juices and where it does it. A designer is always active and ready to work everywhere, for this he needs a slim and light laptop which fits in his backpack without any extra weight. The power to mobility ratio should be entirely on the line, light and compact laptop with an equally powerful performance to run all the creative suits effortlessly. But the first and foremost drive is the budget, it is true that you don’t need an expensive laptop to start with your graphics career, but it is always better to go with the high-end laptops because they provide you with a good experience and productivity.

The price of a graphic designer’s laptop will always be more than any other regular laptop because of the enhanced specifications. Usually, the price of a graphic designer’s laptop ranges from $600 to $1200; this is the ideal price for a good laptop. However, it is not important to have a laptop this costly also, if anyone has budget constraints regarding a graphics laptop, you can opt for a budget laptop with higher specifications. The ideal specifications which a graphic designer is mainly concerned about are:

  • RAM– The size of RAM matters a lot to graphic designers because they tend to seek a smooth functioning with their programs, any kind of lag or unresponsiveness becomes frustrating for them, that is why a laptop with minimum RAM of 8GB should be considered, going higher depends upon your budget and requirements.
  • Hard Drives– For a graphic designer, storage really matters! They work on files which can take up a lot of space on the system, like even a single picture after editing can be up to 3GB or more. To avoid the low-storage problem, they are advised to buy a laptop with a minimum of 1TB of storage if they are not thinking to use an external hard drive in the future. The best type of storage drives is the SSDs which are both faster and smaller in a laptop.
  • Battery Life– Having a longer battery life is always better for anyone, not specifically a graphic designer. The headache of carrying the charger everywhere becomes a mess. Being a graphic designer, as the system is mostly engaging with heavier software programs and media files consume a lot of battery, so having a laptop with at least 10-12 hours of battery life is great.
  • Processors- The best processors which are preferred are the high-end ones, always. This is because the designers have to transfer heavy files and have to consume a lot of what the processor provides. Having a good processor can help speed up processes and is the one which is compatible with most programs is the best. I prefer the AMD 10 and Intel Core i5 (8th generation).

The graphics processor which ensures speed and performance are the AMD FirePro and NVidia GeForce.

One also has to decide between a MacOS or a windows laptop; the battle of a millennial, these days both the OS’ are flexible, and it is different and unique to work on both of them.  Whatever your preferences are, the laptops as mentioned above are the best laptops on the list for especially the purpose of graphic designing. My recommendation for a graphic designing laptop would be the Dell XPS 15 or the MacBook Pro because of what they look like, as in the sleek design and the dominant performance they both own.
